I love December. There are so many good things about the last month of the year. The least of which is NOT my birthday. I love my birthday.
That is right. Later this week I will turn the big……41. Which is possibly worse than 40 because now when someone asks my age, instead of a quick 40 spilling out of my mouth, it is going to be fortyyyyyyyyy-one.
Wow. That seems long. And old.
But I don’t care. I have always loved my special day. The older I get the more I love it. The older I get the more I expect out of my big day.
My twenties and thirties were spent with the attitude of: For me? Oh you shouldn’t have. Please don’t do too much, it is just a birthday.
My forties have become more of: I have lived 40 plus years and you people better blow me out of the water. I deserve it. Make it special. Pull out all of the stops. Spare no expense. Go that extra mile.
I don’t know what it is about the aging process but I am learning as I go. This year I thought I would put together a list to help you make my birthday extra special.
Here is a list of Tonja’s birthday wishes and wants. Please grab a pencil.
1. I would like for friends and heck even people I barely know, to give me a running and/or jumping hug when we see each other. Even if my arms are full at the grocery store. I will make room for you in my personal space.
2. I wish to NOT have to go to the grocery store on my birthday. There. I just made number 1 even easier.
3. I would like for a marching band to follow me around. All day. I want to be played out every time I leave a room. Can you imagine? Amazing. And if there is one of those super fancy drum majors, all the better.
4. I would like for everyone who passes me on the street to give me their best pageant wave. Pageant wave just screams fabulous.
5. I would like for seventies music to be playing in every store/business that I happen into. There is none better than KC and the Sunshine Band. And the entire Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. And any Bee Gees album. Make it disco.
6. I want everyone I see to ask me if I have lost weight. Preferably after one of those running/jumping hugs. I haven’t. But if enough of you ask me, then I will actually start to believe it. No matter how tight my fat jeans are.
7. I wish random breakdancing and moonwalking would break out around me throughout the day. And if it was to turn into a dance competition? So be it. Be sure to have the Sugarhill Gang blaring on a jam box. Bonus points.
8. I would like to pose as a sales associate in a lady’s shoe department without being arrested. I want to hang out with shoes. And help ladies find the perfect shoe for every occasion. Then I would like a 70% discount on every pair that I can find in my size. Then I would like for someone else to carry all of my bags to my new Range Rover. Please note: I do not currently own a Range Rover.
9. I would like to have a phenomenal hair day. Like shampoo commercial good. I want people to be caught off guard by my unnervingly good-looking hair. I would not hate a couple of fender benders from people staring.
10. I would like to eat a bite of every cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory and not gain a single ounce. Oh come on. Who didn’t see that one coming.
Gahhh making this list was fun. That would be one amazing birthday. But unfortunately most of that will not happen.
The running hugs are totally going to happen though. So just be ready.
What really makes a 41-year-old happy on her birthday? Being surrounded by family and friends.
My kids telling me Happy Birthday, then asking me to make breakfast.
My husband taking me to dinner and asking the staff to make a fuss.
Someone telling me that I don’t look a day over 35. ( I adore people who love me enough to lie.)
Thinking of birthdays from when I was a kid.
Realizing that for 41 years running, I have had my good health.
People taking the time out of their busy day to wish me a happy day.
That is what it is really all about. I mean sure if someone wants to rent a billboard or put my flawless, airbrushed picture on the side of a bus with a birthday message, there is really nothing I can do to stop you.
